C-Section babies are born with low levels of beneficial bacteria!

A few years ago I attended a health & wellness seminar in which one of the speakers, who was a registered nurse, shared some news regarding C-Section babies not getting enough good bacterial flora from their mother, due to not going through the birth canal. She continued to explain how this lack of bacterial flora is being linked to a number of health issues such as allergies, asthma, eczema, obesity, celiac disease and food allergies. And she also mentioned that some medical facilities are looking into giving newborn C-section babies a probiotic after birth, to help bring up the levels of good bacteria in their gut.

This information struck a chord with me, as two members of my family were born via C-section, and one of them has intestinal issues, specifically a mild case of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and the other one has been battling with periodic mild eczema since he was born. And the interesting thing was that the one with GERD has been taking Shaklee’s Vitalizer off and on for about the past year and had already mentioned to me how he noticed that if he stays on it, he doesn’t have any GERD flare-ups, but if he gets off of it for awhile, the issues return. At the time, I had no explanation for this, but after learning about C-section babies lacking in good flora, I did a little research on-line and sure enough I discovered that being low on good bacteria in the gut can also lead to a number of intestinal issues, to include…. GERD. Amongst the 6 supplements found in our daily Vitalizer strip, one of them is an amazing probiotic pearl!!!  So…… it all came together like pieces of a puzzle!

And the family member with eczema, well he’s only had it off and on, as I said, but he did receive some extra probiotic when he was about 2 years old. You see, there were a few months when his mother chose to give him Shaklee’s Citriboost, a powdered multi-vitamin product, which also contains a prebiotic & probiotic proprietary blend.

Knowing what I know now….if I had it to do all over again, I would make sure that my C-section delivered loved ones were given a good, quality probiotic for a while after birth, just to get their gut loaded up on the good stuff, giving them a stronger, healthier start in life!! But keep in mind…not all probiotics on the market can be trusted to offer the benefits they claim to offer! 😉 Check out a previous post as to what makes Shaklee’s probiotic unique!!
